# Downtimes

A **downtime** is a period during which a [machine](/en/resources/production-hierarchy/machines.md) is not producing. ENLYZE detects downtimes automatically and assigns them to the respective machine. Each downtime can be assigned a **downtime reason** that categorizes its cause.

Downtimes are a central basis for availability as a component of [OEE](/en/concepts/understanding-oee.md) and help you identify recurring causes of production losses.

## Downtimes in the platform

In the downtime list you see the detected downtimes of a machine with their time range and assigned reason. From there you assign reasons and analyze failure patterns.

## More on downtimes

This page describes the downtime as a resource. You can find the details here:

* [**Categories & assignment**](/en/concepts/downtimes/categories-and-assignment.md): how downtime reasons are structured.
* [**Defining downtime reasons**](/en/production-optimization/downtimes/defining-reasons.md) and [**assigning reasons**](/en/production-optimization/downtimes/assigning-reasons.md): how to work with downtimes day to day.
